How do I start the process of becoming a driving instructor?

Go to the 19 Step Plan page and follow the steps.

Is it necessary to buy an expensive ADI training course?

No this isn’t necessary. You can become an ADI independently by following Jonathan’s 19 Step Plan

Alternatively, buy a cost effective ADI training course with a driving school in your local area. Then use the video tutorials on this website to complement the training you receive from the driving school. The more knowledge you gain the more your confidence will grow!

I've already bought an ADI training course. Should I still buy your video tutorials?

Yes you’ll find them very helpful. The Part 2 & Part 3 video tutorials will expand your knowledge, help you improve your ability and boost your confidence.

Using these video tutorials will increase your chances of passing.

Once purchased, how do I watch the video tutorials?

When you buy the video tutorials you’ll create a password.

Then…

1. LOGIN (The login button is at the top of the website to the right of the BOOM logo).

2. Go to MENU

3. Go to WATCH

4. Go to whichever set of tutorials you have purchased:

  • PART 2 VIDEO TUTORIALS
  • PART 3 VIDEO TUTORIALS
  • PART 3 TEST DEMONSTRATIONS
  • STANDARDS CHECK DEMONSTRATIONS

You will see all the video tutorials plus available resources.

How long do I have to watch the video tutorials?

Once purchased you will have full, unlimited access to watch the video tutorials for:

  • 3 months for the Part 2 Video Tutorials*
  • 6 months for the Part 3 Video Tutorials*
  • 6 weeks for the Part 3 Test Lesson Demonstrations
  • 6 weeks for the Standards Check Lesson Demonstartions

This gives you ample time to watch the video tutorials and learn what to do.

After this period access will close and the video tutorials will no longer be available for you to watch.

* Please note: due to the current situation of long waiting times to secure part 2 and part 3 test slots; Jonathan will happily extend access (for free) for both the part 2 & 3 video tutorials (upon request). Just email Jonathan and explain you’d like to extend access and Jonathan will do this for you.

After buying the video tutorials can I have a refund?

No, you can’t have a refund. The fee paid is non-refundable. When you purchase the video tutorials you have immediate access to watch all available videos and print all the resources. Therefore you could watch all the video tutorials over a 24 hour period by binge watching all the videos and printing all the resources (we don’t recommend doing this). This is why the fee is non-refundable. The non-refund policy is stated in the T&C’s which you’ll be asked to read before making payment.

How long will it take to qualify?

On average you will need:

  • 6-8 weeks to prepare for the Part 1 theory test (based on 30 minutes studying each day).
  • 4-6 weeks to prepare for the Part 2 test of driving ability (based on 2-3 hours of learning and practicing each week).
  • 14-20 weeks to prepare for the Part 3 test of teaching ability (based on 2-4 hours of learning or practicing each week).

There are currently quite long waiting times for Part 2 and Part 3 test dates. The availability of test dates will determine how long it takes you to qualify.

Do I need to buy any study/revision products?

To prepare for the Part 1 theory test you will need to buy a couple of books and an app. You’ll spend about £25 to buy these.

In terms of Part 2 and Part 3 you won’t need to buy any additional books or study materials. Everything you need is provided as a printable resource once you have purchased the Part 2 or Part 3 Video Tutorials. You will find these video tutorials and the resources provided very comprehensive.

How much are the exam and registration fees?

Part 1 test = £81
Part 2 test = £111
Part 3 test = £111
Trainee licence fee = £140
Final registration fee = £300

These fees are all payable to DVSA

If I buy the Part 2 Video Tutorials will I still need some in-car training?

You can prepare yourself for the Part 2 test without having in-car lessons. The Part 2 Video Tutorials are very comprehensive. They explain and demonstrate best driving practice for all categories on the DL25 Driving Test Report form.

You can easily self-learn, self-practice and self-improve your driving skills. You can self-correct any bad driving habits you might have. You can easily prepare yourself for the Part 2 test.

However, if you feel you’d like a few lessons with an ADI before you attempt the Part 2 test then you can make arrangements for this. If you have specific driving weaknesses that you are struggling to self-improve then you will need a few in-car lessons. Contact an experienced ADI in your local area and explain you have an upcoming Part 2 test. The ADI will assess your driving and give you feedback.

Can I take the Part 2 test in my own car?

Yes. Click HERE for more info.

Do I need specialist car insurance when I take the Part 2 test?

No, your current car insurance fine.

What if I fail the Part 2 test?

You have three attempts to pass the Part 2 test.

Providing you are properly prepared you will have an excellent chance of passing.

The Part 2 Video Tutorials will help you prepare for the Part 2 test.

If you did fail three times you’d have to wait 2 years from the date of passing the theory test before you can start the application process again.

If I buy the Part 3 Video Tutorials will I also need in-car training?

There’s no requirement to have in-car training (unless you apply for a PDI Licence*).

The Part 3 Video Tutorials are very comprehensive. You’ll learn how to teach pupils from beginner level to test standard; you’ll learn all 17 competences & you’ll learn how to pass the Part 3 test.

After watching these video tutorials you’ll need to practice teaching pupils before attempting the Part 3 test. The easiest way of doing this is to teach for free, using your own car, in your spare time.

2 or 3 lessons per week over a 10-12 week period will be sufficient practice before your first attempt of the Part 3 test.

However, you might decide you’d like some in-car training. In this case, find an ADI trainer in your local area. It’s your choice how many hours training you buy (perhaps 5, 10 or 15 hours in-car training). Or, you might choose not to have any in-car training and exclusively use the Part 3 Video Tutorials on this website. It really is your choice.

*If you want to apply for a PDI Licence you’ll need 40 hours Part 3 training with an ADI, and 10 of these hours must be in-car.

Do I have to apply for a Trainee Licence? (PDI Licence/Pink Badge)

No, instead you can teach for free, using your own car (or using the pupils car). Keep your current job and do this in your spare time.

You don’t have to apply for a PDI Licence.

Note: Trainee Licence / PDI Licence / Pink Badge all mean the same thing.

If I teach for free, do I have to send the ADI 21T Instructor Training Declaration form to DVSA confirming I've had 40 hours training?

No. If you teach for free you don’t need 40 hours training with an ADI, and there are no forms to send to DVSA.

You only have to send the ADI 21T Instructor Training Declaration form to DVSA if you apply for a Pink Badge.

If you teach for free you don’t have to show DVSA any records of training. There is no paperwork!

If I teach for free, can I get dual controls fitted in my own car?

Yes. It’s a good idea to do this for safety.

However, you will need specific learner driver insurance. For example, a driving instructor insurance provider called Watkin Davis will insure your car with dual controls fitted (without needing a Pink Badge) providing you have passed the Part 2 test.

You can then teach for free using your car with dual controls fitted and your car will be fully insured for this.

How do I use a Trainee Licence?

Find a driving school to sponsor you. You must have 40 hours Part 3 training with an ADI before applying for a PDI Licence.

Your sponsoring ADI will need to supervise you on 20% of your lessons; or give you an additional 20 hours training before taking your first attempt of the Part 3 test.

Your sponsoring ADI is responsible for all training relating to the Trainee Licence and is responsible for signing all the forms to be sent to DVSA.

Note: Jonathan cannot sign the ADI 21T Instructor Training declaration form for you. This is the responsibility of your sponsoring ADI at the driving school you are working for during this trainee licence period.

Can the Part 3 video tutorials count towards the 40 hours training needed to apply for a Trainee Licence?

Yes, but only with the cooperation of your sponsoring ADI.

You must ask your sponsoring ADI if they are willing to use the Part 3 Video Tutorials as part of the 40 hours training needed to apply for a Pink Badge.

If you intend to apply for a Trainee Licence (Pink Badge) the following applies:

  • The Part 3 Video Tutorials can only count towards the required 40 hours training needed to apply for a Trainee Licence with the cooperation of your sponsoring ADI.
  • You must communicate with your sponsoring ADI to establish whether they are willing to use the Part 3 Video Tutorials as part of their 40 hours Part 3 training.
  • It is the responsibility of your sponsoring ADI to provide all training required relating to the Trainee Licence.
  • It is the responsibility of your sponsoring ADI to sign all forms to be sent to DVSA (such as the ADI 21T Instructor Training Declaration form).

Note: Jonathan cannot sign the ADI 21T Instructor Training Declaration form for you. This is the responsibility of your sponsoring ADI at the driving school you are working for during this trainee licence period.

Is Jonathan available to mentor me whilst I'm practicing teaching pupils?

Yes, providing you’ve bought the Part 3 Video Tutorials.

You can buy 45 minute phone/or video calls with Jonathan for advice and guidance to help you prepare for the Part 3 test.

Go to MENU – BUY – 45 Minute 1-to-1 Phone or Video Call

What if I fail the Part 3 test?

You have three attempts to pass the Part 3 test.

You’ll increase your chances of passing by using the Part 3 Video Tutorials. You’ll learn how to teach pupils, you’ll fully learn the 17 competences and you’ll learn how to pass the Part 3 test.

Can I take the Part 2 and 3 test in an automatic car and then teach in a manual car?

Yes, providing your full driving licence is a manual licence. If your full driving licence is automatic then you can only teach in an automatic car.

I’d like to become an ADI but can’t afford to buy a car. Is this a problem?

This is no problem. Most newly qualified ADI’s lease a car. There are no upfront fees to pay when leasing a car so it’s an easy way to get started. There are several companies who specialise in leasing cars fitted with dual controls to driving instructors. See the ‘Contacts/Links’ page for more info.

Is car insurance expensive as a driving instructor?

It’s actually not as expensive as you might imagine. For example, Jonathan’s current car insurance is about £600 for 12 months.

There are several driving tuition car insurance companies listed on the ‘Contacts/Links’ page.

I’ve never been self-employed. What do I need to do?

Most ADI’s are self-employed. The good news is it’s quite easy being a self-employed. Once you’re qualified Jonathan can give you some advice and guidance to help you get started.

Once fully qualified should I go independent; or join an established driving school?

Both are good options.

Either way, there is plenty of work available.
