Requirements for becoming a
driving instructor
There are three tests to pass to qualify as a DVSA Approved Driving Instructor (ADI)
Part 1: Theory test consisting of 100 multiple choice questions and a hazard perception test.
Part 2: Test of driving ability lasting 1 hour.
Part 3: Test of ability to teach pupils lasting 45 minutes.
To become a driving instructor you:
- Must be 21 years old or over.
- Must have held a full driving licence for at least 3 years.
- Can’t have been banned from driving in the last 4 years.
- Can’t have more than 5-6 points on your driving licence.
- Must be a ‘fit and proper’ person. You’ll need to have a criminal record check when you apply to become an ADI.
