Practice options for teaching pupils leading up to your Part 3 test.

Option 1: Teach for free

Independent pratice. This option requires the least commitment.

Teach for free using your own car (or using the pupils car). Keep your current job and teach for free in your spare time.

You’ll need short-term learner driver insurance. See the Contacts/Links page for a list of insurance companies.

Find 2-4 learner drivers to practice teaching. Ask around (family, friends, neighbours, work colleagues etc), you’ll easily find a few willing learner drivers eager to have free lessons.

Your car must have L plates displayed and an extra interior mirror fitted on the passenger side. You don’t need dual controls; but you can get them fitted if you want to (check with the insurance company first that this doesn’t affect the cover).

You won’t need to send any paperwork to DVSA. There are no forms to fill in. You don’t need 40 hours training with an ADI.

Before taking the part 3 test aim to do 20-40 practice lessons. This is ample practice. The part 3 test is a test of competence, not a test of experience.

Try to have 2-4 practice lessons per week over a 10-12 week period; then take the part 3 test.

This is the easiest way to prepare for the Part 3 test. You literally practice teaching pupils for free using your own car, then take the part 3 test when you feel ready. There is no paperwork involved and no responsibility or committment to a driving school. You are completely independent.

Option 2: PDI Licence

Find out about the trainee licence.

This option requires the most commitment.

Find a driving school willing to sponsor you.

You need a car fitted with dual controls.

You must have 40 hours training with an ADI, 10 hours must be in-car.

You must have an additional 20 hours training before your first attempt of the part 3 test; or 20% of your lessons will need supervising. This extra training or supervision is the responsibility of your sponsoring ADI/driving school.

It is the sponsoring ADI’s responsibility to complete any necessary paperwork (such as the ADI 21T form).

A PDI Licence is valid for 6 months, but can be extended if DVSA cannot provide a Part 3 test date within this 6 month period.

In summary

The video tutorials on this website will teach you the necessary skills and help you pass the three qualifying tests to become a DVSA Approved Driving Instructor (ADI).
