Practice Options for Teaching Pupils Before Your Part 3 test.

Option 1: Teach for free (Independent Practice)

This is the simplest and most flexible way to prepare for the Part 3 test, requiring minimal commitment.

  • Teach for free using your own car or the pupil’s car.
  • Keep your current job and teach in your spare time.
  • Get short-term learner driver insurance (see the Contacts/Links page for providers).
  • Find 2-4 learner drivers to practice with—ask family, friends, neighbours, or colleagues.
  • Your car must have L plates and a passenger-side interior mirror.
  • Dual controls are not required, but you can install them (check with your insurer first).
  • No need to fill out paperwork or notify the DVSA.
  • You don’t need 40 hours training with an ADI.

Practice Guidelines

  • Aim for 20-40 practice lessons before your Part 3 test.
  • Try to do 2-4 lessons per week over 10-12 weeks before taking the test.
  • The Part 3 test assesses competence, not experience, so structured practice is key.

Why choose this option?

  • No paperwork, no commitments, and no obligations to a driving school.
  • Completely independent—you decide when you’re ready to take the test.

Option 2: Trainee Licence

Find out about the trainee licence.

This option requires the highest level of commitment.

  • Find a driving school that is willing to sponsor you.
  • Use a dual-controlled car for training and lessons.
  • Complete 40 hours of training with an ADI, with at least 10 hours in-car.
  • Before your first Part 3 test attempt, you must either:
    • Complete an additional 20 hours of training, OR
    • Have 20% of your lessons supervised by your sponsoring ADI.
  • Your sponsoring ADI is responsible for handling all required paperwork, such as the ADI 21T form.
  • A Trainee Licence is valid for 6 months but may be extended if the DVSA cannot offer a Part 3 test date within that period.

Summary

The video tutorials on this website provide the essential skills and guidance you need to pass all three qualifying tests and become a DVSA Approved Driving Instructor (ADI).
